TR and the Coal Mines
In 1902, coal miners waged strike in order to get better pay, shorter hours, and union recognition. However, as the strike wore on, many people began to worry about the rapidly dwindling coal supply. Theodore Roosevelt responded to the pleas of the people and intervened by urging the coal miners and their employers to return to work. When this failed to reach a result, Roosevelt threatened to send troops down to settle the disagreement. The coal miners eventually ended up with a 10% increase in pay.
